SUPPLICATIO
apud Romanos honos fuit, qui una cum Imperatoris nomine decernebatur Victori: Nempe, cum Senatus Populo Deûm templa aperiri, ac gratias Diis, Imperatoris nomine, agriuberet. Erat enim moris, ut Consules vel Praetores, postquam a militibus appellati Imperatores fuerant, Lictores, laureatos praeferrent, literasque laureatas ad Senatum, de re gesta, mitterent quibus Imperatoris nomen ac Supplicationes a Senatu postularent. In qua pompa, quae alias pauciores continuabatur dies, Senatus ad templa Deorum sollemniter se conferebat ibique sacrificabat et dabat in templis epulum: Omnis autem Populus agebat Diis gratias pro spe victoriae, quae affulgebat, et festos celebrans dies, vota faciebat, ut Dii hôc modô placati, quod ostenderant beneficium, perficerent. Quamvis vero primis temporibus in unum alterumve diem Supplicatio aegre decernebatur, tamen ad postremum eo progressa est, ut etiam in quinquaginta decretae sint. Marco enim Valerio et M. Hinc phrasis Decernere Supplicationes, quem honorem Graeci hâc periphrasi exprimunt: ἡ Σύγκλητος ἐψηφἰσατο θύειν τοῖς θεοῖς καὶ ςχολάζειν ἑορτάζοντας, sacrificiis et festivis vacationibus, eum denotantes.
